CLPS - A review

I was fortunate enough to be invited to review a response to a critical incident using the CLPS Tap App and critical infrastructure integration software at the Wayne County Public Safety Center, hosted by the Sheriff's Office and Sheriff Milby. I had not met anyone from this company until this day, though I had heard good things.

The goal on this training day was to activate a lockdown through the Tap app, and have the Wayne County Dispatch Center navigate police officers into the school and confront a shooter.

To be honest I have seen similar technology before, and rarely does it work as advertised. There is always a hiccup in integration, firewalls, vendor non compliance, or antiquated infrastructure.

But guess what? This one worked, smooth and clean.

The lockdown was initiated from inside the building using Tap App. Using a map of the school, the camera application pinpointed the location of the cellphone that initiated the lockdown. Camera screens from school cameras located near that cell phone location automatically popped up for view at the dispatch center. A chat window opened and an alert went out to all users with the app installed.

Immediately the officers stationed at the door were fed accurate information by dispatch. They approached a door and within seconds, dispatch was able to unlock that door with the click of an icon on a map which allowed them keyless access inside. Once inside, school cameras immediately picked up responding officers and dispatch was able to guide the officers to the shooter’s location within minutes.

As we all know, minutes save lives.

But wait.. that's not all. Dispatch was able to make announcements over the school PA, giving instructions to whomever was on scene. Real time chat was happening through the app between educators and responders. Though it was a mock scenario, I could see the value in all of this.

Well done CLPS... well done.

Day 2 was left of bang training - Threat assessment.

The first half of the training was things most of us in law enforcement have heard before. Explanations of the pathway to violence and the importance guiding someone off that path through the use of school based threat assessment teams. This was very similar to the message being sent DHSES, NTAC, C-STAG, and the rest of them.

Then they rolled out their software, and I was blown away. It flows better than any product I have seen to date. The structure is seamless. It literally walks a school based threat assessment team step by step through the threat management process. It provides for digital checks and balances. It creates timelines and reminders. Best of all - it takes all the guess work out of the process and documents it. WOW. I have been looking for something exactly like this for over 10 years . Here it is!

Well done CLPS... well done.

The only complaint I have... and its a minor one.. is that aesthetically it looks a little clunky. But I can see they put all their effort into make a flawless product instead of worrying about fun little caricatures and pretty colors.

Oh wait... there's more...

Its free...

Wait what!???? hahaha. They advertise that If your school is insured by Utica National, they subsidize it and foot the bill for the threat assessment software.

What if you don't have Utica National? No worries, they are on the BOCES coser.

Here is their website.

Stay safe all!
